Sad to sell o319 restored and o319 panorama project

Beitragvon Sitting Duck » 09.04.2020, 01:22

Hello fellow Mercedes l319 and o319 enthusiasts,

I am not going forward with my business plan to start a wine tour business here on the Central Coast of California. I took out a $100,000 loan to restore both buses and start the business. I got in over my head and did not know how hard it would be to source parts. Purchasing parts from Germany and paying that premium, plus shipping and handling, and money wire transfer fees. Then there is a lot of surface area on these busses and with the amount of metal and body work involved, it just sucked up the money very quickly. I was only able to restore one bus and buy a lot of parts for the second project bus before I used up ALL the $100,000 loan and have nothing left to restore the second bus or start the wine tour business.

I have a nicely restored, (not off chassis nut and bolt restoration) 1961 o319 2 door. I have the original motor and transmission but I put a Toyota 20R with 5 speed manual transmission with overdrive so I get it up to 65 MPH, (barely).
For the 1963 project bus 3-door panorama, it has been stripped and media blasted and primed, and comes with a low mileage Mercedes w115/m115 110 HP gas long block motor with a 4 speed manual transmission, (not installed). It is complete except for seats/interior. I have purchased a lot of body replacement sheet metal and other parts for it.

Anyway, I can provide a more detailed list of work for the restoration but basically, most everything was done.

It will be on Bring A Trailer .com next week
and there will be an article write up about the bus in Hagerty online magazine next week also

I am sort of selling because of the virus but not completely. I have lost work and but finances are tough mostly because of the investment I have made on these busses. I have intentions of starting a wine tour business here on the central coast of California. I borrowed $100,000 to restore both busses and start the business. I ended up using all the money to restore the one bus and buy parts for the second bus. I do not have anything left to restore the second bus or start the business. I have had my fun, (pain) now it is time to move on and get out of debt.

How sad, that you have to sell your busses. The restored one looks really nice.
Good luck for selling them AND getting back the invested money.
Christian

I responded to a private message here on this forum but did not hear back.
I sold the 1963 project bus no drivetrain, (without motor/transmission/driveshaft) for 12,000. It did have extras that I had purchased for the restoration. I lost about $5,000 at least.
I sold my refurbished / restored 1961 17 passenger 2-door non-panorama o319 omnibus at online auction for $82,500. I was hoping for $100,000. I lost money on this bus also.
I truly enjoyed the journey and the experience. I fell in love with the o319. I just could not stand by and watch that bus rust to death. I am very happy to have reserected this bus.
The attention it received during the auction was amazing. Over 99% of people here in the USA have never even heard of one. This bus blew their minds!

Thank you to the l319/o319 community for your support and encouragement throughout this process. I will be checking in from time to time.
